America Sign Language: Is it universal?

I can't tell you how many times people have said to me or how many times I have heard, "I thought sign language was universal?"  Well, guess what, American Sign Language (ASL) is not universal. For the record, there is also variations in the signs of this language from county, to city, to state. There is also a difference between American Sign Language and Signed Exact English.
